North Haven families,
It is hard to believe that we are in the last week of May. With June coming, there are going to be end of year activities to look forward to as well as regular classroom activities, please continue to read through the classroom messages as well as the Peek at the Week for any upcoming activities or year-end events.
Residency
We would like to thank Terry Lynn Cook for spending time with us this past week and making further connections into our understanding of Indigenous culture and curriculum. She is a Metis educational consultant from Northern Alberta and brought a unique perspective to her work with staff and students. Students and teachers were able to work with Terry Lynn in many curricular ways throughout the week.
PATs
As we prepare for our first Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Test this coming Wednesday, we want to provide a little context and information on the PATs. Grade 6 students will be taking part in Part A of their English Language Arts and Literature course this week, which will assess the new Alberta curriculum.
These tests provide a snapshot of how well students are meeting provincial curriculum expectations at a particular point in time. They are just one of many tools we use to evaluate and support student learning. While they offer valuable data about individual and group achievement in core subject areas, they are not the sole measure of a student’s ability or success. Daily classroom assessments, projects, observations, and teacher feedback play more significant roles in understanding and supporting each child’s learning journey.
The results of the PATs help inform school planning, guide instructional decisions, and ensure that we are meeting the diverse needs of our learners. At the provincial level, the data contributes to broader educational planning and accountability. We encourage all students to approach the PATs with a positive mindset and to do their best, but we also remind them — and you — that these assessments are not 'high-stakes tests'. They are part of a balanced approach to assessment that supports continuous growth and improvement.

We are pleased to invite our volunteers to our Volunteer Tea on Tuesday, May 27 at 8:30 am. We would like to request that you let us know if you will be joining us by filling in this form.
