Lunch Supervision
The Calgary Board of Education provides students with the option to stay at school for lunch. Lunch Supervision is offered to all North Haven students in Grades 1- 6 for an annual fee. Please visit us https://cbe.ab.ca/programs/noon-supervision page for more information.
- Students bring their own lunch. There is no access to a refrigerator or microwave.
- When the weather is inclement, lunchroom supervisors organize indoor activities (eg. -20 degrees Celsius or below with wind chill)
- Please ensure that your child(ren) is dressed for Calgary’s changing weather conditions. We go outside for recess as much as possible depending on the weather. Students need this playtime to burn off excess energy, so they are prepared mentally and physically to learn in the afternoon.
- Students are supervised during the entire lunch period. The drop-in fee is $5 per day
Supervision
- Our Adult Supervisors wear bright yellow vests so students can identify supervisors quickly & easily. They carry walkie-talkies that allow communication with the office and each other in case of an emergency. They are responsible for the supervision of our students during lunchtime. Supervision is provided from 11:40-12:20 p.m.
- Parents of students registered for lunchroom supervision who wish to pick up their children during lunchtime must check in at our office. Office staff will arrange for your child(ren) to come to the office.
Lunchroom Hours and Procedures
- Students bring their lunch to school in a lunch bag clearly labelled with the student's name.
- For food safety please pack lunch items that can be safely stored at room temperature. Most perishable foods can only be stored at room temperature for 2 hours before safely being consumed. Our school does not supply Hot water or Microwaves for student use.
- Outside play areas are divided into cohorts (Division 1 and Division 2) to ensure that students can access equipment and play areas safely.
Behaviour
- Students needing to use the washroom must let their supervisor know. The supervisor will have them sign out and back in upon returning.
- We follow the CBE (Calgary Board of Education) Lunchroom Supervision manual's best practices on outdoor play and playground equipment, using the general and winter safety guidelines.
- Please speak with your child about the importance of speaking out on verbal and physical bullying. Our hope is by encouraging a sense of community and by teaching and learning to understand and embrace our differences our children will never be victims of bullying, nor will any feel that they need to bully others.
Allergies | Nut Aware School
There are a number of North Haven students who have a potentially life-threatening allergy to peanuts and tree nuts. We are committed to providing a safe environment that is inclusive to all children. Learn more about allergies and other health concerns on our Illness & Medical page.
Food Choices
As stated in the Calgary Board of Education's Administrative Regulation 3047 - Nutrition: The CBE supports access to healthy, nutritional food choices for students that are essential to establish an environment that is safe, caring, and conducive to effective learning by ... ensuring that good nutrition is promoted both in theory and in practice.
North Haven, as a CBE elementary school, is required to provide emergency food and beverages to our students that fall into the Alberta Nutritional Guidelines' "Choose Most Often and Choose Sometimes." Providing emergency pantry food supports that are individually prepackaged for students in need. We encourage families to send healthy snacks and lunch items to school with their children.
Healthy Hunger Fun Lunch Program
Once again, for this year, the parent council will have special lunch days through the lunch program for your child provided by Healthy Hunger!
How will it work?
The School Council has chosen the restaurants that are currently partnered with Healthy Hunger. When available, gluten-free options have been included.
All orders and payments will be made online. If you have not previously done so, you will need to set up an account with Healthy Hunger, click on the link below to register.
If you have already registered from a previous year, you will need to go back into your account, re-add each student to your account, and assign them to their current year's classroom. Simply choose from the list available on the Healthy Hunger website.
Once logged in, you can also view any upcoming lunches or prior orders you may have already processed.
You can place an order for one lunch or all lunches that we have set up, all at the same time. No changes can be made to your order, and no new orders will be accepted 5 business days prior to the fun lunch date.
Birthdays
Birthdays are an important day for every student, and they like to celebrate this special day with their classmates! However, we ask that families please refrain from sending food or other items from home to celebrate birthdays. Teachers recognize birthdays in many other ways.
Recycling/Waste/Compost (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)
- We encourage students to bring a "waste-free lunch." A waste-free lunch contains no disposable or throwaway packaging. Pack drinks and food into reusable food and drink containers, then place them within a reusable lunch bag or box. This method favours reusable food and drink containers, washable cutlery, and cloth napkins. All containers are re-sealable so that leftover food and drink can be consumed (or composted) later. (Recycling Council of Alberta).
- There are bins for garbage and refundables in the lunchroom. Green compost bins are also available during lunchtimes.
- At North Haven, we do our best to ensure the safety and enjoyment of our students during their lunch break.
Home-Packed Lunch Tips for Parents
Lunch is an important part of your child’s day at school. Here are some tips to help you provide a lunch that is safe and nutritious with less waste.
Food Safety
- Keep cold food cold by using an insulated lunch bag and 1-2 ice packs.
- Keep hot food hot by using an insulated container. Preheat your container with boiling water before adding hot food. Microwave ovens are not available for elementary students.
- Pack non-perishables, such as granola bars and whole fruit, that can be kept at room temperature.
- Most CBE schools are nut-aware, please check with your child’s teacher for more information on nut allergies and other allergies in your child’s classroom.
Help Reduce Waste
- Bring a reusable water bottle.
- Pack just enough for a child to eat during lunch.
- Many schools participate in “boomerang lunches” (pack in/pack out), where all leftover items are returned home.
Tip: Pack a sealable bag or container labeled ‘garbage’ for uneaten food or open containers to avoid mess in the lunch bag.
In 2024, ten CBE schools participated in a waste audit conducted by Green Calgary. Here are a few suggestions from the audit to help minimize waste produced by packed lunches:
- Send less selections of food. Younger children have difficulty deciding what to eat when there is a lot of choice and sometimes end up not eating.
- When possible, use reusable containers for foods such as crackers and cut up fruits or vegetables.
Other Tips
- Make sure your child can open all packages by themselves.
- Involve your child in packing their lunch. Children involved in food preparation may be more likely to try new foods and eat what is packed, minimizing food waste.
- Aim to include a food from each food group – lean proteins, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables should be eaten daily (as per Canada’s Food Guide 2019).
- Some items, such as sandwiches, can be made ahead and frozen to save time. Note that some fillings such as fresh vegetables do not freeze well.
- Designate a shelf in the fridge/pantry at home for lunch items. This may help make packing lunches quicker and encourage independence for children packing their own lunches.
