Peek at the Week

September 28 – October 2, 2026
North Haven School

Good evening, North Haven families,

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Thursday to meet our teachers, visit classrooms and learn more about the year ahead. A special thank you to our School Council and Parent Association for providing treats for students and pizza for staff. We appreciated having so many families in the building!

We have another busy week ahead, including Orange Shirt Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and our Terry Fox Run.

Our Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

As we approach Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we are taking time at North Haven to learn, reflect and consider how our actions contribute to reconciliation throughout the year.

North Haven has established our 2026–2027 Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. This year, we are committed to creating meaningful opportunities for students, staff and families to deepen their understanding of Indigenous cultures, perspectives, and connections to land and place. Our work will include learning with Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers and increasing opportunities for authentic land- and place-based learning.

Reconciliation is ongoing work. Throughout the year, we will continue to reflect on what we are learning, how it is reflected in our school, and the next steps we can take together.

October Theme: Growth Mindset: The Power of “Yet”

This month, our school-wide focus is growth mindset—helping students understand that learning takes time and that not being able to do something yet does not mean they cannot learn to do it.

The words children hear from the adults and peers around them matter. When we say, “I’m just not good at math,” or “I could never do that,” children can begin to see abilities as something we either have or we don’t. Instead, we can model being learners ourselves: “I find this difficult, but I can keep working at it,” or “I haven’t figured this out yet.”

At North Haven, we want students to know that mistakes, challenges and setbacks are a normal part of learning. Growth happens when we are willing to try, ask for help, use a different strategy and keep going.

Try it at home: Listen for an “I can’t” this week and add one small word: yet.

“I can’t do this math… yet.”
“I don’t understand this… yet.”
“I’m not good at this… yet.”

We can also notice and praise the process, not just the result: “I noticed you kept trying,” “You tried a different strategy,” or “You asked for help when you needed it.”

Together, the messages students hear at home, at school and from one another can help them become confident learners who are open to what they might be able to do next.
